Profile

The Disability Resource Center provides information and supportive services to Cal Poly students with permanent and temporary disabilities.
Incumbents in this position provide interpreting services at an advanced level or in highly complex situations, often involving high levels of interaction such as advanced level classes, discussions, seminars, conferences and/or a variety of platform settings.
The position is responsible for delivering high quality, accurate interpretation within the framework of professional standards. The incumbent makes independent decisions at the time of interpretation about the most effective methods to use for the delivery of sign language interpreting services.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only)
Range A:
Must possess and maintain skills certification in EITHER interpreting or transliteration as issued by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)
AND/OR
Certification at Level 4 or higher by the National Association for the Deaf (NAD)
AND/OR
National Interpretation Certification (NIC) at an Advanced Level or higher
AND/OR
Comparable Certification from an accredited agency.
Two years of paid interpreting experience preferably at a post-secondary educational level.
Range B:
Must possess and maintain skills certification in BOTH interpreting and transliteration from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)
AND/OR
Certification at a Level 5 or higher from the National Association for the Deaf (NAD)
AND/OR
National Interpretation Certification (NIC) at Master's Level
AND/OR
Comparable Certification from an accredited agency.
Two years of paid interpreting experience preferably at a post-secondary educational level.
Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills
Thorough knowledge of the process of interpretation to convey accurately the register, tone, intent, and content of the consumer's message
Demonstrated understanding of the special communication needs of Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing consumers
Comprehensive understanding of Deaf Culture
Working knowledge of platform interpreting techniques
Working knowledge of vocabulary, terminology and basic information in a variety of subjects
Specific knowledge of specialized vocabulary and techniques used in interpreting professional and technical subject matter
Working knowledge of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) code of professional conduct
Ability to hear spoken English and use ASL, Signed English, and/or another manual sign system to effectively generate language
Ability to adapt terminology, language, instruction, concept, theory, and emotion to convey all aspects of the lecture, teaching material and experiences
Ability to interpret effectively at a level that requires using unique terminology and language
Ability to effectively shift between ASL or a manual sign system to spoken English and vice versa in highly interactive situations, such as discussions, workshops, seminars and platform settings
Ability to interpret difficult and complex terms, concepts, ideas and emotions
Ability to learn unique subject matter, theories, and terminology
Ability to provide accurate, thorough and comprehensive services
Ability to be responsive to students' communication needs and preferences
Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, staff

Special Conditions (Staff)
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
