Cal Poly is seeking an experienced, motivated, and committed fundraiser to fill the critical Assistant Dean of Advancement and External Relations role in the College of Science and Math.
The Assistant Dean for Advancement and External Relations will serve as the lead professional in the college to cultivate and solicit alumni, parents, friends, employers, foundations and corporations for contributions. The incumbent will direct the implementation and coordination of a comprehensive college-based development program by identifying, qualifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gifts; understand and comply with the policies, procedures and best practices established by University Development; foster successful major gift fundraising by preparing the Dean and other academic leaders to participate routinely and effectively in development activities and prospect appointments; and participate in college based programs that identify and encourage relationships with donors, prospects and alumni.
The Assistant Dean of Advancement and External Relations reports directly to the Dean of the college and will work in collaboration with the University Development team under the joint direction of the Dean and the Associate Vice President for Development. This position is responsible for providing extensive strategic planning, articulation and implementation of college-wide development and advancement initiatives that have multiple year objectives, as well as coordinating capital campaigns that enhance and promote major fundraising and public relations efforts consistent with the mission and vision of the college. The incumbent will oversee a comprehensive and dynamic marketing program; represent the college at development events; recruit, train, support and motivate volunteers; provide administrative oversight of all advancement processes; and perform the full range of supervisory duties for CSM advancement and public relations staff.
The College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) is an engaged learning community that is central to educating all Cal Poly students as its curricula form the foundation of the polytechnic curriculum. The college comprises seven departments?Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Kinesiology and Public Health, Liberal Studies, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, and the School of Education. The college offers 12 undergraduate degrees, six graduate degrees, and post-graduate teaching credentials. The college has approximately 225 full-time faculty members, 70 staff members, 2,800 undergraduates and 320 graduate students. The College of Science and Mathematics Advancement Office is responsible for all aspects of external relations for the college including strategic planning for and implementation of fundraising programs designed to secure growing levels of private funding in support of the mission and vision of the CSM.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only)
Bachelor's degree and a minimum of eight years of professional experience, including a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in development, advancement, sales, marketing, public relations or a related field.
Demonstrated experience in development, major gifts fundraising, planned giving, or other related professional field is required, with preference for experience in a university setting.
Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills
Demonstrated success in major gift fundraising that demonstrates an ability to align strategy development and implementation with pre-approved goals and priorities.
Previous experience in capital campaigns, major gift cultivation and/or donor solicitation.
Demonstrated experience in developing and cultivating contacts within the advancement community.
Demonstrated ability to independently manage a large, complex, and successful program with annual and multi-year goals in a major long-term capital project campaign.
Exhibit a high-energy, collaborative, and productive working style.
Demonstrated experience in drafting complex proposals to individuals and fundraising communications.
Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
Strong knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn to use prospect management systems.
Experience working with executives and/or volunteers in fundraising strategy development and execution.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
Ability to utilize the alumni relations database as an organizational tool.
Demonstrated ability to identify, qualify, and solicit potential major gift donor contacts.
Demonstrated organizational and administrative leadership, and staff supervision skills.
Successful management style characterized by a commitment to collaboration and creativity. Recognized as an effective advocate who exhibits high ethical standards of conduct and confidentiality in dealing with various internal and external constituencies.
Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
Proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, online systems, internet as well as online calendaring and email.
Experience in record keeping, using principles of accounting, budgeting, etc.
Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn CSM and University infrastructure, policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications / Skills
Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
Fundraising experience in a university setting.

Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for professional development.
Must be able to work additional hours, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Ability to travel on a regular basis either locally or on overnight trips from one to five consecutive days, often several times per month.
Full-time MPP employees are required to disclose outside employment at time of hire or within 30 days of taking additional outside employment subsequent to time of hire.

This position classification has been defined as Exempt and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
