Summary
The Army Instructor is responsible for the effective management of quality of classroom instruction and integrated-curricular activities of assigned classes. The AI works in conjunction with the SAI to effectively manage the JROTC unit at the school and maintaining good relations with school authorities. The AI, in coordination with the SAI will assist in establishing standard operating procedures relating to the administration, control, and training of JROTC cadets. These procedures will cover the appointment, promotion, and demotion of Cadet Officers and noncommissioned officers. The SOP must be approved by the senior school official.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage and conduct the JROTC unit according to school rules, regulations, and policies.Represent the school in matters pertaining to the Department of the Army and the JROTC Program. Serve as a strong advocate for the JROTC Program at the District and State level.Ensure, on behalf of the school, district and the Army that the JROTC program is administered in accordance with law, regulations, and policies.Prepare weekly training schedules.Conduct a public affairs effort in the local area middle and elementary schools, among school and community officials, civic group, parent teacher groups and other individuals or groups, designed to further the understanding of JROTC, the school and the Army.Enroll students in JROTC and support school officials while executing the curriculum and the integrated extra-curricular activities, IAW CCR 145-2, paragraph 9-13.Maintain contact with parents of all Cadets experiencing academic or behavioral problems.Ensure JROTC unit areas are neat and orderly; current chain of command photos, Cadet Creed, core abilities and mission statement are present; and all sensitive items are secured.Ensure instructors share teaching responsibilities. No instructor is exempt from teaching a fair share of the LET POI.Instructors should teach by expertise and preference in subject areas, rather than strictly by LET levels.All instructors (SAI/AIs) are responsible for teaching the JROTC curriculum.Maintain a current copy of DA Form 3126 (Application and Contract for Establishment of a JROTC Unit), a completed service learning checklist/rubric, a current copy of a bond/insurance certificate, and required JUMS reports.Maintain accountability of all equipment, IAW AR 710-2, including items requiring formal accountability (i.e. air rifles, drill rifles), informal accountability (i.e.,clothing) and durable items costing $5000.00 or less (i.e., automation, computers, audiovisual), but still requiring property accountability.Request curriculum materials and distribute.Submit required reports in a timely manner.Establish, instill and ensure enforcement of program standards.Observe both the military and school chain of command.Abide by U.S. Army rules and regulations specifically Chapter 4, Military Discipline and Conduct, AR 600-2, Army Command Policy.
Qualfications: The applicant must be interviewed and approved by U.S. Army Cadet Command. Must be retired Army in the grades of E6 thru E9, W1 thru W5. Must meet all Cadet Command eligibility and qualification standards and be Cadet Command certified as a JROTC Instructor. Must complete the JROTC Five-Step instructor training plan as prescribed in paragraph 8-4, Cadet Command Regulation 145-2. A minimum of an associate's degree from an accredited college or university is required. Army Instructors are retired Staff Sergeant (E6) thru Sergeant Major (E9), Warrant Officers W-1 thru W5, and are required to have a minimum of an Associates degree or higher from an accredited institution; permanently retired from the Army; served last year of active duty as an Non Commissioned Officer or Warrant Officer; retired less than three (3) years (may be waived in exceptional cases); meet Army JROTC height/weight body fat standards, high standards of military bearing, appearance and moral character. If still on active duty must be within 12 months of retirement with retirement orders.
