A teller is a person working in an office who handles cash and checks. A teller handles all operations including depositing and withdrawing cash as well as checks into the bank. A bank teller also posts loan payments and other payments. He or she should possess knowledge of banks and banking products.

Required Knowledge and Skills



The minimum education required is a high school diploma and basic knowledge of bookkeeping and should know how to complete bank deposit and withdrawal slips and other bank formalities. Additional qualifications include the following:
  • He or she should have experience in handling cash.
  • The person should have excellent communication skills to handle customers and also employees.
  • He /she should be able to do simple math calculations like percentages, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • A teller has to deal with customers regularly regarding payments hence he/she needs to be patient, polite and cooperative with them.
  • A teller should always portray a professional image.
  • Tellers must be skillful in prioritizing work and payments.
  • A teller is responsible for collecting payment and also for distributing salary to the co workers.
  • A teller has to be very honest and careful as he/she handles cash regularly.
  • The ability to operate accounts on the computer is essential as these days computers are the best way for maintaining records.
  • A teller needs to be well organized and meticulous in his or her work.
Responsibilities and Field of Work

A teller performs a variety of jobs and duties which are explained as follows:
  • A teller has to maintain a record of the daily transactions of cash and checks with the help of computers and adding machines.
  • A teller is responsible for checking vouchers before giving out cash.
  • They are responsible for tallying and checking the check with the bank slip before depositing it into a customer's account.
  • A teller has to enter every transaction into the computer in order to maintain transaction records.
  • A teller is responsible for counting cash and writing the balance after each working day ends.
  • They handle coins and currency deposits.
  • A teller is responsible for resolving any payment or cash related discrepancies.
  • He /she should make sure that there is a regular cash supply required for daily work.
  • They process cashier's checks, traveler's checks, and money order.
  • They sell and redeem saving bonds.
  • They are also responsible for resolving client's queries.
Employment and Salary

A branch teller has an average salary of $10-$12 for an hour's work. This is approximately $24,000 per year.
